Microsoft Framework ASP NET Vs PHP

ASP.NET and PHP are two of the most popular technologies for developing dynamic web applications and rich web services. Even if, as a programmer, you probably have taken on side or another, there are chances that in your work you’ll need to migrate projects from PHP to ASP.NET. When this happens, you’ll need to take into consideration the peculiarities of each development tool, such as: architecture and functionalities.

Both the Microsoft technology and PHP are employed in building complex websites which may have different purposes, such as: corporate, commercial, or local use purpose. So before making the actual migration, you’ll need to make sure that the end in itself stays the same, and only the path to reach it changes.

While ASP.NET is a set of technologies incorporated in the Microsoft.NET framework, PHP is similar to a development language, more exactly a scripting language. An ASP.NET page resembles a PHP page in terms of execution, as it generates markup such as HTM, WML, XML, however there are substantial differences. One of them is that ASP.NET offers a powerful object-oriented + event-driven programming model for creating web pages. On the other hand, apps. built in ASP.NET rely on a robust OOP context, and not on a scripting context. A developer will feel comfortably to switch to ASP.NET, as it maintains the same simplicity offered by the PHP tool.

In terms of feature comparison, please see more details below:

* Coding languages: The Microsoft tool supports more than 25 languages (such as: Visual Basic.NET and C#), while PHP supports C, C++ and some OOP concepts.

* Compiling logic: In ASP.NET is supported (dynamically + pre-compiled modes); compilation is supported in PHP, and can be run as an executable.
* External components: ASP.NET offer extensive support for native C libraries and COM objects (plus assemblies written in.NET compatible languages); In PHP the ZEND engine can be manually modified, as it is open source.

* Database access: ASP.NET supports OLE-DB and ODBC, plus native drivers for Oracle and Microsoft SQL Server. PHP has drivers compatible with the most popular databases on the market, and open source databases.

* XML Web services: In ASP.NET web services are easily published and consumed, thanks to the wide and flexible standards-compliant support. PHP is compatible with the web services based on Apache AXIS engine and others.

*XML / XSLT : The Microsoft tool supports XML DOM, XSLT validation and allows lightweight stream-oriented parsing for XML docs. PHP supports XML/XSLT in add-on packages + libraries.

* Debugging: The Microsoft framework includes extensive debugging support, such as: tracing and environment info which can be include din the same, or a separate, page. A plus is that Microsoft Visual Studio.NET permits easy debugging of pages while executing. Although, PHP doesn’t offer developers direct extensive support for debugging, more products from 3rd parties are available for testing and debugging.

*Threading: The Microsoft tool offers complete support, for example – page requests that are simultaneous take place in separate threads. PHP offers a good threading model.

* Code re-usability: The Microsoft framework offers: Server Controls, User Controls, custom classes, and included files. On the other hand, PHP comes with user defined functions, and the ability to build Classes.
